Breaking News ! The national lockdown could be tightened within days with ministers reportedly considering limiting exercise, markets, click-and-collect services and moving home. A Government source told a newspaper that ministers are prepared to introduce tougher measures if compliance with current restrictions has not improved by the weekend. Some of the extra steps being discussed by ministers reportedly include stopping two people from meeting outside for exercise and shutting more businesses. These closures would affect estate agents, outdoor markets and stores operating click-and-collect services, it is claimed. Updated Government guidance also suggests home moves may be temporarily banned, reports The Mirror. A statement on the gov.uk website says: "It may become necessary to pause all home moves locally or nationally for a short period of time to manage the spread of coronavirus. We will let you know if this needs to happen.” Another change reportedly being proposed by scientists is increasing the two-metre social distancing rule to three metres, Mail Online reports. Downing Street has said it would rather people follow the existing rules than be forced to introduce new restrictions.

Giving evidence at a health committee, he said: "It seems now pretty clear the infection rate is not going to go down as quickly as it did in the first phase, and it’s going to go down more slowly because of the increased transmissibility of the new strain. "We were hoping for a sharp peak that came sooner and shorter. So something for example where we saw the peak and started to crest it in mid to late January. "Now if that’s right that’s going to basically mean there’s a higher level, and a more extended period of pressure on the NHS than we were expecting even just a week ago." NHS England data showed there were 32,070 Covid-19 patients in English hospitals as of 8am on Monday. The figure is up 20% compared to last week, and up 81% since Christmas Day.
