Breaking News ! A Northumberland benefits cheat claimed more than £14,000 in carer's allowance and income support when he wasn't officially caring for anyone. Keith Laidlaw pocketed the cash, which he wasn't entitled to, after falsely telling the Department for Work and Pensions that he was the sole carer for his partner. However, his girlfriend actually had formal carers assisting her from 2016 but the 51-year-old continued to claim the associated benefits, a court was told. Now, Laidlaw, formerly of Main Street, Acomb, in Hexham, but who now living at Scales Crescent, Prudhoe, has pleaded guilty to two counts of dishonestly making a false statement to obtain a benefit after his deception was finally unveiled. Glenda Beck, prosecuting at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court, said the total Laidlaw unlawfully claimed in Carer's Allowance and Income Support was £14,152. She continued: "The Crown would say that the claims were fraudulent from the outset." "When her health deteriorated later, when carers formally became involved, the claim should have ceased but it didn't.

. He said: "You have pleaded guilty to these two allegations, sensibly, in my judgement. You will get full credit for that in due course. "We need to find out a bit more about why this offence occurred. I'm going to adjourn for a Pre-Sentence Report." Laidlaw was released on unconditional bail to next appear back at the same court on August 7. Judge Currer added: "Should the report come back and it is unfavourable, I'm not ruling out committal for sentence."
