Breaking News ! A Gateshead man has put up a sign to scare people off renting the flat above - as he claims it is infested with RATS. Luciano Giusti took extreme action after finding rodents "as big as dogs" running up the walls. His £420-a-month ground floor flat, in Ryton, Gateshead is caked in rat droppings while the 55-year-old fears the pests could make children ill. For five weeks he said he has pleaded for help - and a new home - but claims nobody has listened. The Gateshead Housing Company, which is responsible for the property, insists it has been in touch with him throughout the saga as it works to try and get rid of the rats. But fed-up, Luciano has erected a sign in his window, which reads 'rat infested, please think hard' to warn people thinking about renting the empty flat above. "Behind the fire place there is a mountain of rat poo. It is filthy, but the council are not bothered," he claims. Luciano has found rat droppings behind the fire in his livingroom and claims he can hear them in the walls. I'm depressed to the point I don't even want to go home after work." "I was having a cup of tea when I spotted it, so I got a big aluminium pole and hit it. "I showed it to my local councillor and he admitted it was disgusting and shouldn't be here." He claims the council offered to put him in a hotel until the rats are gone. But sick of "living in filth", he wants a different permanent property. As such, he is staging a one-man protest from his window, trying to hit Gateshead Housing Company where he thinks they will notice it the most - their pockets. "I have heard they are very angry, but at the end of the day, I'm going to keep doing this as it isn't right that I should be paying £420 in rent and £80 in council tax just to live with rats," he added. "If one of these rats bit a child, then they could get Wells Disease and the council could get sued for millions. A spokesperson for The Gateshead Housing Company, which has managed Gateshead Council's properties since 2004, said: "We are working with our pest control contractor to resolve the issue as soon as possible. "We have kept in touch with Mr Giusti throughout this process, and have offered him alternative accommodation until the issue is resolved."
