Breaking News ! The final Virgin Money Unity Arena gigs have been cancelled due to the new coronavirus restrictions. Around two million people in the North East are unable to mingle with family and friends due to tough new rules aimed at stopping the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the region. However the final shows this weekend, featuring acts including Jack Savoretti and the Kaiser Chiefs, have now been pulled. It means Thursday's show, headlined by dance act Chase & Status, will the final gig of the summer at the arena, dubbed the world's first socially distanced music venue. “It is extremely disappointing to have to cancel these final shows at the end of what has been an incredible six week run of successfully socially-distanced concerts.," said event organiser Steve Davis, from SSD Concerts. "We're honoured to have been able to provide a little happiness and joy to thousands of music and comedy fans throughout the region and the UK in what has been such a tough 2020 for everyone. “We have complied with all government guidance to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our audience, artists and crew throughout. We’d like to thank all who attended these genuinely heart warming and uplifting events. Over 50,000 people attended shows during the last month at Britain's only gig continuous gig venue since lockdown.

However Health Secretary Matt Hancock's announcement brings the venue to a premature end. Refunds for any cancelled shows will be available at point of purchase. “Unfortunately, due to the rise of infection in the North East, we must comply with the council’s and the government’s latest advice.," added Mr Davis.
