North East UK news easyJet closure at Newcastle Airport: what it means for passengers MetiNews.Com
MetiNews.Com - Flights over the summer will go ahead, but services later in the year could be affected by decision to close airport hub
Breaking News ! Budget airline bosses say summer flights from Newcastle will not be affected by the decision to close its hub at the airport. EasyJet dropped bombshell news that it plans to close its regional hub at Newcastle airport later this year, resulting in significant job losses. The airline, which has flown from Newcastle since 2003, has around 150 staff at the airport and flights to a host of destinations including Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante, Corfu, Malta, Nice and Geneva. Despite the planned shutdown of its operation in Newcastle, which would see it cease basing crew and aircraft at Newcastle, the firm said that flights from the airport remain on sale and the airport will continue to be part of easyJet’s route network. But it added that flights already booked for later in the year could be affected if changes are made to future flight schedules. The firm said that if a decision is made to close the base following consultation, customers will be notified directly with any changes and inform them of their options.
. Customers will also have the option to transfer to another flight if they wish, potentially from another airport, without a change fee, up to 14 days ahead of departure. A spokeswoman said: “As we have only just started this consultation and no decisions have yet been taken, the proposals are close our Newcastle base at the end of August so customers booked to fly from the airport over the summer will not be affected as a result of this. “Newcastle remains an important network point for us and we will still continue to serve the airport as a destination as part of our wider network as much of our flying is inbound from bases around the UK. These flights will continue as they do today.”
