Breaking News ! Spectators waiting to see a Spitfire in the skies over the North East were left hugely disappointment by its sudden cancellation. The aircraft had been due to fly over Newcastle on Wednesday afternoon in a special tribute to the NHS which organisers then called off due to cloudy weather. Those living across Tyneside, Wearside, Northumberland and Durham also had been expecting to see the flypast with the Spitfire planning a national tour to raise funds for NHS Charities Together. But the Aircraft Restoration Company which owns it - and which had raised donations by covering the plane with names of people nominated as having carried out an act of kindness during the pandemic - was forced to cancel the bulk of the eagerly-awaited North East leg of the event because of low cloud and poor visibility. In a post on its Facebook page the company said: "The weather has taken an unexpected turn for the worse with low cloud and poor visibility forcing the NHS Spitfire to return to Duxford." The shorter flight plan it reintroduced later took in a "handful" of locations, after a weather "corridor" was found up to Cumbernauld Airport in Scotland. The plan is to reschedule the other locations at a future date.

.20am before setting off again in the afternoon to soar over hospitals and local communities around Durham, Gateshead and Newcastle - taking in the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Newcastle Freeman hospitals - before going on to Northumberland. Following good weather on Tuesday, Wednesday's change to cloudy conditions came as a huge disappointment. The company's Facebook followers reacted with disappointment to the cancellation, with comments including: "So disappointed not to see the flypast over Durham. Bloomin weather" but there was understanding too with one saying: "A very poor weather day so right decision. Hopefully see you another day." The company says it will fly the postponed parts of the route at a later date but there is no news yet as to when the rescheduled flight will take place.
