Breaking News ! The North East is set to remain in Tier 2 lockdown-style measures for at least another week. There were fears over the course of the week that the region including Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, County Durham, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside would be upgraded into a Tier 3 Very High alert area due to worrying coronavirus rates, which would close bars and pubs. But Tier 2 does still mean people in the North East are barred from visiting other households. Visitors can still come to the region to attend events, work or for care reasons. They are also allowed to come into the area to socialise, but only with people from their own household and they are asked not to at all. People living in a Tier 2 area, like the North East, are allowed to travel to Tier 1 and Tier 2 areas, although those living in Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas are advised to stay put as much as they can. Again, that is advice. You won't be prosecuted for leaving a Tier 2 or Tier 3 area, or travelling to one. What Tier are Newcastle, Gateshead Sunderland, Durham, Northumberland and Tyneside in and can I travel between them? The counties of Tyne and Wear (which includes Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside) County Durham and Northumberland are all in Tier 2 and are deemed to be High Risk. There is no legal restriction on travelling between tiers, so people are allowed to come into the North East from elsewhere, while those living in the North East are allowed to travel within it - and out. But the Government is asking people in Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas to stay where they are. It says people living in Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas are "advised‌ ‌not‌ ‌to‌ ‌travel‌ ‌in‌ ‌and‌ ‌out‌ ‌of‌ ‌these‌ ‌areas".

. Those living in Tier 2 and Tier 3, in particular, are urged not to travel, but they won't be stopped from doing so. Can I leave the North East Tier 2 area to travel to a Tier 1 area or Scotland? Technically, you can, but people are urged not to do so other than for absolutely essential journeys. If you are heading from the North East to Cumbria, which is Tier 1, do not visit other households or socialise with anybody from outside your household. The rules which ban people from mixing with other households apply to where you live, even if you are out that area and visiting another, Dr Mike Tildesley, an expert in infection modelling from Warwick University, told Mirror Online. You are also allowed to travel to Scotland, but you will not be permitted to meet anyone from outside your household. Visit Scotland is currently advising people in Tier 2 and Tier 3 to only travel to Scotland for essential journeys. The Scottish Government is said to be considering a travel ban for people from coronavirus hotspots, such as the North East. People in the North East are especially advised not to travel to Tier 3 areas, such as Liverpool. The Government says: “You‌ ‌should‌ ‌also‌ ‌avoid‌ ‌travelling‌ ‌to‌ ‌any‌ ‌part‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌country‌ ‌subject‌ ‌to‌ ‌higher‌ ‌local‌ ‌Covid‌ ‌alert‌ ‌levels.”‌ ‌ How long will the North East be in Tier 2? For at least a week, as council leaders won a reprieve which saw the region remain in Tier 2 instead of Tier 3. It is like that Tier 2 restrictions will continue for some time, if the region is not upgraded to Tier 3 in a week.
