Breaking News ! Worrying new data shows that over 50 towns and cities in England have seen a rise in Covid-19 cases during the last week. New Public Health England data has revealed 54 areas saw more people test positive for coronavirus in the seven days to Friday than the week before, despite being almost two months into the third national lockdown. The Mirror reports that last week, just 16 areas had a week-on-week rise. Figures from January 25, more than three weeks after England was plunged into its third national lockdown, show there were 27 areas recording a rise. The upward trend comes as officials call on the public to continue to stick to rules as the government tries to bring the country out of lockdown. Rutland, North Warwickshire, Gosport, Craven in Yorkshire and Corby in Northamptonshire were the places that saw the steepest rises. Corby now has the highest infection rate in the country. Figures show that of 315 local authority areas in England, 260 have seen a fall in cases, 52 recorded a rise and three are unchanged. Peterborough has the second highest rate in England, up slightly from 264.0 to 270.9 cases per 100,000 people, while Middlesbrough is in third after a sharp drop. On Monday, Boris Johnson announced his four-stage plan to bring the country out of lockdown, starting on March 8, when schools will reopen. However experts warn that easing restrictions will drive up the number of cases. The government's chief scientific advisor Sir Patrick Vallance said the UK could see a big "resurgence" in cases as he praised moves to allow several weeks between each lockdown stage to assess the impact. "The sooner you open up everything, the higher the risk of a bigger resurgence," he said. "The slower you do it, the better." The PM said he was taking a "cautious" approach, saying that although he was hopeful life could return to normal by June, he would be "guided by data, not dates".
