Breaking News ! A total of 6,634 new lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the UK in the past 24 hours. It's the highest ever daily number of confirmed cases since the outbreak began. As of 4pm on Thursday September 24, there's been a further 40 deaths confirmed in the past day. The UK death toll is now at 41,902. Figures from the Department of Health also show that overall, 416,363 cases have been confirmed in the UK since the start of the pandemic. Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,500 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. Today's government figures follow sharp rises over the past few days with new cases said to be doubling every seven days. However Yvonne Doyle, medical director at Public Health England, said today's figures are a "stark warning for us all" as she confirmed the record. She said: “This is the highest number recorded and a stark warning for us all. The signals are clear. Positivity rates are rising across all age groups and we’re continuing to see spikes in rates of admission to hospital and critical care.

.” A further 30 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals to 29,838, NHS England said on Thursday. Patients were aged between 18 and 101 and all except two, aged 53 and 82, had known underlying health conditions. The dates of the deaths were between September 17 and September 23. In Wales, there have been a further 348 cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 21,896. Public Health Wales said one further death had been reported, with the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic increasing to 1,606. In Scotland, two more Covid-19 deaths have been recorded and 465 people have tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours – the second highest daily total since the pandemic began. Nicola Sturgeon said 25,960 people have now tested positive overall and 2,510 have died after being confirmed to have Covid-19.
