Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman with serious injuries was found outside a house on Hillside Avenue in Shaw. Emergency services were initially called to a 'concern for welfare' report at around 8.50pm last night (Tuesday). The woman was taken to hospital but she sadly died a short time later. This morning, neighbours on Hillside Avenue woke up to find their street taped off by police. A cordon is in place on a stretch of the road and several police vehicles are stationed at the scene. "At about 9pm two police cars with the blue lights on came racing up", she said. "Probably five minutes later police transit vans and the armed police and ambulance turned up. "There were eight armed police at the front of the house. "They were shouting ‘Armed police, come out with your hands up’. "A female was brought out on a stretcher. She was in the ambulance for about 20 minutes before it went. A police cordon on Hillside Avenue (Image: STEVE ALLEN) "One of the police officers went to a house over the road and got some blankets. "I didn’t see him being arrested. Quite a few neighbours were out in the street.
. "Then they put up the CSI tent and there was activity until about 3am." Another emotional neighbour teared up as she spoke to the M.E.N .

She said: “I was on the phone to my mum and I had my back to the window so I didn’t see anything. "I should have seen something because we look down the hill onto the house. "We didn’t hear any arguing or anything “I just wish I could help more. I feel so sorry for her and her family. "She was quite quiet but I said hi when I saw her. It’s just awful, it’s so close to home.” Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident - no matter how small - to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Wilkinson, of GMP's Major Investigation Team, said: "A woman has sadly lost her life tonight and our thoughts remains with her family at this incredibly difficult time. "This is understandably a distressing incident for local residents, and I would like to reassure the community that although we currently have a man in custody, our investigation is very much still on going and officers at the scene are following all available lines of enquiry to establish the full circumstances surrounding this woman's tragic death. "If anyone has any information at all that can help us with our investigation, please get in touch as soon as possible. "Even the smallest piece of information could be vital in helping us to complete our enquiries."
