Breaking News ! Reported crime plummeted in Greater Manchester last year, according to the latest government figures. Some 271,434 crimes were recorded in the region during 2020 when the nation was placed in lockdown and grappled with the coronavirus pandemic. That represents a fall of 12 per cent. But some crime types saw marked increases despite the restrictions: stalking, drugs crime, bike theft and serious road accidents. Some 28,118 crimes of 'stalking and harassment' were recorded in Greater Manchester in the year to December 2020, according to crime figures published by the Officer for National Statistics (ONS). That was up 18 per cent compared to the previous year. Last year also saw 3,840 reports of bike theft, up five per cent. With the roads emptier than usual, 67 people were killed or seriously injured on the roads of Greater Manchester during 2020, up 43 per cent compared to the year before, according to the figures. All other types of crime fell during year including violence (down one per cent to 90,534 crimes), sex offences (down six per cent to 8,456 offences) and robbery (down 30 per cent to 4,899). Reported house burglaries also fell to 16,625, down eight per cent compared to the previous year but still the highest figure recorded by any force except the Metropolitan Police Service.

The Greater Manchester has historically reported high levels of burglary compared to everywhere else in the country. The latest figures show 5.9 reports of burglary in our region for every 1,000 people in the population, higher than anywhere else in the England or Wales. The Met recoded 5.2 residential burglaries per thousand people while West Midlands Police - the most similar force to GMP - recorded 5.1. GMP also recorded 8,456 sex crimes, down six per cent but still higher than anywhere except London.
