Breaking News ! The North East is to follow Greater Manchester in being hit by new local lockdown measures to stop the spread of coronavirus, it has been confirmed tonight. The restrictions will include a ban on people socialising outside their own household and a 10pm curfew on pubs, restaurants and other licensed premises, our sister title ChronicleLive reports. The current plan is for measures to come into force just after midnight on Friday morning - September 18, in a bid to reverse a dramatic spike in coronavirus cases across the region. Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, County Durham and Sunderland are all expected to be included. Around 2.6million people live in the region in total. No official announcement has been made about the plans, and nothing will be confirmed until a statement is issued by the Department for Health and Social Care. Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes (Image: Newcastle Chronicle) But Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick told ITV's Peston on Wednesday night: "The number of cases has been rising rapidly in many parts of the country, but in particular in the North East, and so a decision has been made to impose further restrictions there. "And a full announcement will be made tomorrow and so people living in that part of the country should watch out for that. "And the measures will come into play at midnight on Thursday evening. "So, over the course of the day a full briefing will be made available to everybody including the councils and business community." . Mr Forbes tweeted: "Some additional, temporary restrictions are being planned to prevent another full lockdown." He replied: "We are waiting confirmation from Government on the final version of the regulations; I am expecting an announcement by the Health Secretary at 11am tomorrow." ChronicleLive understands that restrictions expected to be announced, but not yet confirmed, include: People will be told not to go on holiday with people from different households Care home visits will be restricted to essential visitors only Residents will be advised to avoid public transport at peak times except for essential journeys, and to avoid car-shares Spectators will be advised not to attend sporting venues These are on top of the "rule of six" in force nationwide, which allows people to socialise only in groups of six or fewer. The new North East rules will mean the rule of six still applies, but those six people must all come from the same household. It's unclear how measures will be enforced. Last week the Government introduced limited restrictions in Birmingham, barring people from socialising with people from other households in their homes or gardens, enforceable with a £100 fine. A spokesman for the Department of Health and Social Care said: "We constantly monitor infection rates across the country and keep all measures under review in consultation with local leaders. "Any changes to local restrictions will be announced in the usual way."
