Breaking News ! The latest plans for the £1billion Northern Gateway project will involve building 270 new homes and a park - but require the demolition of 28 existing homes, Manchester Council says. The landmark regeneration scheme aims to achieve a complete overhaul of Collyhurst and the wider Irk Valley area in north Manchester. Over the two decades, it is hoped around 15,000 new homes will be built as part of a joint venture between Manchester City Council and FEC (Far East Consortium). New schools, healthcare facilities and transport links are promised for the 155-hectare area stretching two miles out from the city centre. The M.E.N reported last month on the seven new neighbourhoods that the council is aiming to put on the map. Redevelopment plans for Collyhurst have been promised and never delivered many times over the years, and some local residents remain sceptical of the latest plans and fearful that it will see their communities wiped from the map. Speaking about the prospect of being forced to move, she told the M.E.N: "It’s awful to think I might not be living here in the future. If I think about it too much, I might cry. I don’t want to be 70 and worrying about moving home or buying a new one." Latest plans for the Northern Gateway housing project in Collyhurst (Image: Manchester Council) Now Manchester Council and developer partner FEC have confirmed a cluster of 28 homes will require demolition as part their plans. In a press release, the council said all residents who are affected by the plans have already been contacted and 'will be supported to move into the new homes'. Grandma Anne Worthington, left, spoke out about the plans in TV documentary Manctopia (Image: BBC) No existing homes will be demolished in Collyhurst until replacements have been built so that existing residents can move 'seamlessly' into the new properties, the council added. A further round of consultation will now take place before final plans for the first phase of new housing development in the neighbourhood are drawn up. The ambition is to provide around 270 new homes split across two neighbourhoods - Collyhurst Village and South Collyhurst. This phase of development will also include 130 council homes for social rent, the council says. A further round of consultation on the plans is now taking place (Image: Manchester Council) In line with Covid-19 public health regulations, the consultation will take an 'innovative approach' to ensure Collyhurst residents can safely view the proposals and participate in the consultation process in a number of ways, the council adds.

. Final proposals that will form the planning application for the first phase of development within Collyhurst will be presented to the local community later this year ahead of planning submission. Cllr Suzanne Richards, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and Regeneration, said: “Throughout the early stages of the Northern Gateway project input from local people has been invaluable. The views of Collyhurst residents have been listened to and taken onboard as part of the proposals that we are now about to start consulting on. “Following this phase of the consultation we will bring back final proposals to the community one last time before planning applications are submitted for Collyhurst. We are asking once again for residents to take some time to look at the proposals now and give us their final thoughts. “Covid has meant we need to think differently about how we engage people and the online exhibition is a great way to get a feel for the plan and give feedback - but there is also the opportunity for residents to give their feedback offline or over the phone. Whatever works for them. The important thing is that we want all residents to be able to have their say." Victoria Hunter of Far East Consortium said “We’re excited to share with the local community our proposals for the new homes in Collyhurst. The design of the homes has been developed in consultation with residents through listening to what’s important to local people. "Wellbeing of the community is at the heart of the proposals, through the creation of a New Collyhurst Park and energy efficient homes suitable for people at all stages of life. "The homes have been designed with first time buyers and families in mind and with 100 of the new homes being specifically for existing Council tenants, the proposals provide a mix of homes for an inclusive community. “Good placemaking is about collaboration and we want the local community to let us know their views on proposals.” Virtual Exhibition and feedback form:  www.collyhurst-regeneration.co.uk Call freephone for information: 08081 699993 Email:  contact@ng-consultation.co.uk Or write using the freepost address: FREEPOST NG CONSULTATION Find more information:  www.northerngatewaymanchester.co.uk
