Breaking News ! Two dealers have been locked up after conspiring to sell Spice, imported from China, on the streets of Manchester. Shahzad Hussain and Christopher Townsend were jailed for a combined total of almost seven years for the supply of Spice-related drug offences. Their convictions are part of a police operation to tackle the criminal exploitation of children and vulnerable people to sell drugs in Manchester - mainly around Piccadilly Gardens. Police are working to tackle drug dealing in Piccadilly Gardens (Image: Manchester Evening News) It’s the first conviction for the multi-agency team behind Operation Fairbank - which was launched in response to an increase of underage people being exploited to supply drugs in the city centre. Police Constable Andrew Beard, of Greater Manchester Police's Challenger team, said: “We hope that these results will be the first of many as part of Operation Fairbank, which will continue to tackle the issues of exploiting vulnerable people with the dealing of 'spice' in Manchester. Hussain, 29, and Townsend, 39, were sentenced on Thursday at Manchester Crown Court. Shahzad Hussain (Image: GMP) Hussain, of Esmond Road, Cheetham Hill, was sentenced to four years and 11 months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply class B drugs, importation of a psychoactive substance, and possession of class B drugs. Townsend, of Moxley Road, Crumpsall, was described in court as a Spice addict who peddled the class B drug for Hussain. He was handed two years in custody after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply class B drugs, possession of a firearm when prohibited, and possession of a section 5 firearm. The court heard how a customs officer from Border Force examined a parcel from Shanghai, China, on the evening of Tuesday March 24 this year. The parcel was found to contain 60 grams of a brown substance which was examined and identified as the class B drug known as 'Spice'.

. A month later his home was raided and as Townsend was being apprehended he told one of the officers: "I will f*** you up. "If you weren't in that uniform I would kill you." He was also found in possession of a  CS gas canister and an air pistol. Townsend was arrested for being concerned in the supply of class B drugs. Hussain was arrested at a later date - following collaborative work between detectives and GMP's drone unit - when he was found to have quantities of Spice in his rucksack. During a police interview, Hussain declined to answer any questions posed by police. Christopher Townsend (Image: GMP) In stark contrast, Townsend made several admissions about the way the class B substance was imported from China and then dealt in Manchester - though he initially denied dealing himself. As the interview proceeded, Townsend described himself as a “small person in a big pond”. The pair were later charged and pleaded guilty to the offences. Judge Patrick Field QC told Hussain: "You are a career drug dealer, as such, a dealer in human misery." He said Hussain, who has previous convictions for dealing heroin and cocaine, has shown a willingness to become drug free in the future. Simeon Evans, defending Townsend, said the defendant was at the 'bottom of the heap' in the drugs trade, selling to feed his own habit. Anyone with any information in the dealing of 'spice' and other prohibited drugs in Manchester should contact police on 101 quoting Operation Fairbank. Reports can be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
