Breaking News ! Fears have been raised Warrington could heading for a local lockdown following a surge in coronavirus infections. Some 69 new cases have been confirmed in the town in the last two days, CheshireLive reports. The infection rate is also rising and the town is now one of England's top 10 hotspots for the virus. Latest Government figures show that as as of Wednesday, September 16, there have been 1,781 positive cases of the virus in Warrington. Warrington's infection rate has also increased and now stands at 105 cases per 100,000 people. The figures come after Warrington's Director of Public Health warned that a local lockdown is  'more likely than not.' Speaking to the BBC Radio Merseyside, Thara Raj, Director of Public Health at Warrington Borough Council, said: "We have seen cases quadruple in the last week, if we go for another week and we quadruple again then we will have overtaken Bolton and we don't want to be there. . "We think we might be going the way that Bolton and other areas have gone, and that is a local lockdown. "We proactively met with the joint bio-security centre and we are awaiting decisions from Whitehall and that is going to happen probably on Thursday (today).
