A career spanning decades working across hospitals in London and Italy had come to an end. Fast forward 30 plus years and the former ICU nurse manager and counsellor has been forced to return to work after her home was discovered to have Grenfell-style cladding. Adeline, who has nightmares about her flat catching fire, is now being asked to pay £33,000 for the removal of flammable cladding as the leaseholder to the property in Woolwich. “We are living in a time bomb,” explains the formerly retired counsellor.

. “I had a very successful career. Now my savings have been getting a hammering.” Adeline’s ‘nest egg,’ which cost her £286,000 when she bought it in 2014, is one of 418 that have lost their worth because of the fire risks. When one of Adeline’s neighbour’s tried to sell her flat for £100,000, despite paying £385,000 to buy the property, no one wanted to buy it. “I couldn’t even have equity rules on my flat” adds Adeline. “I wanted to retire with my nest egg but now it’s all gone.” Adeline had to start working as a nanny to pay for changes to her flat due to flammable cladding (Image: Tim Clarke) In addition to the costs of the cladding itself, Adeline along with the other residents at Cumberland House, on Erebus Drive in the borough of Greenwich, were asked to pay £2,000 for new fire alarms in their flats. However, those alarms are now also considered out of date and now the residents have been asked to pay for a second set of new alarms.
