The centuries-old bridge is now open to buses, licensed cabs, motorbikes and pedestrians and cyclists between 7am and 7pm on weekdays. During the shut down the bridge has been converted by the City of London with two lanes reduced to one in each direction and 2m segregated bike lanes. The work has finished a month ahead of schedule and it is hoped the move will help bring people back into London. Before the pandemic affected transport the work was planned to replace the original protective waterproofing layer below the road surfacing, along with 24 of the original bearings.
. The corporation’s Bridge House Estates owns the bridge and maintains it, while Transport for London runs the road network. Any other essential repairs to the concrete deck were done at the same time, to minimise future disruption. Transport for London said motorists will face queues on Blackfriars Bridge and Tower Bridge. It warned people to plan a different route during 7am to 7pm when many of them are barred from using the bridge. It suggested crossing the River Thames via Westminster Bridge and Lambeth Bridge if possible to avoid delays. The reopening comes as a City of London survey into climate change concerns revealed 59 per cent of respondents backed better cycle plans. And 49 per cent of the 2,600 respondents said they would change the way they travel.
