London is full of incredible secrets but the fact that such a huge number of tunnels and networks were kept hidden for such a long time is quite surprising. You might wonder what on earth so many secret passages were used for. To make matters confusing, there isn't only one answer. Over a number of years, many of the networks constructed were telecommunications lines produced by the Post Office, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and British Telecom (BT).

As the BBC explains, it was built to protect certain communications and machinery from a potential atom bomb during the Cold War era. But it doesn't stop there. The Postmaster General's tunnel is part of a much larger network stretching between the East End of London and Whitehall. Separately to this there's the secret world underneath Holborn. It was originally built as a deep-level government air raid shelter during World War Two, and was later used by loads of engineers, eventually becoming the end point of the first ever transatlantic phone cable.
