The mother and six-year-old daughter were brutally beaten to death with a hammer as they walked along a country lane in Chillenden, Kent. Recovering heroin addict Michael Stone was convicted of their murders and was sentenced to three life sentences although he has always protested his innocence.
. Now a long missing piece of evidence has emerged throwing doubt over Stone's conviction, reports The Sun. A bootlace, which was used to tie up one of the victims, was rediscovered by cops after being lost for 14 years.

Since the horrific attack, DNA testing has come a long way and Stone's barrister hopes further tests on the lace will lead the real killer to be found. The Criminal Cases Review Commission has confirmed an inquiry had begun. If new evidence does lead to Stone's acquittal the question will again be asked - who killed the Russells? Bellfield is said to have told friends he is “in trouble” over evidence that may link him to the murders.
