While Downing Street has explicitly stated that primary age children in Years 1 to 6 should not be made to wear a face covering, Redbridge Council has “gone beyond” Department for Education guidance in “some cases” and advocated their use in early years settings. A parent whose children attend Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic School, Chestnut Drive, Wanstead, said she is confused and disappointed by the school's policy of only admitting pupils in masks, and said it should not be a condition for accessing education. Rosalind Kara, said: “I understand the severity of the virus - we have lost family members in the past 12 months, and all of [our household] recovered from Covid in March 2020.

“However, I strongly feel that all of our children have been through enough upheaval and upset over the past year, their young lives have been put on hold. “There is no doubt in my mind that wearing a mask all day every day will have a considerable negative impact on their mental health and well-being, which at this time should be of paramount importance.” Resident and councillor, Paul Canal, has urged Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School to rethink its policy. “Guidance from the highest level, confirmed by Professor Jonathan Van Tam in recent press conference, suggested mask-wearing by primary school children is ineffective and almost impossible to enforce with young children,” he told MyLondon. “It is also likely to be upsetting for a small child, and seems to most sensible people to be an overreaction."
