Along with other supermarkets the chain is trying out a new virtual queuing system that allows customers to wait their turn from the comfort of their car, a nearby café or even at home.

The system is being piloted in five UK stores from Monday (August 3) - Uxbridge, Pimlico, Dome Roundabout in Watford, Leicester North and Newham Royal Wharf. Sainsbury's said the initiative, which will run until mid-August, will test whether the technology will help customers stay safe, save time and shop conveniently in stores. Customers can download the app on their smartphone and monitor their position from the comfort of their car and will be notified when they reach the front of the queue.
