Currently only people in their late thirties, apart from frontline workers and those with underlying health conditions, have been offered the jab. Speaking on Sky News on May 17, the Mayor of London said the Government should "use the vaccine sensibly" and tackle transmission in pockets with high ratios of the variant.
. He said: "In general terms, I understand the advice from the government and experts to go by age but actually in those parts of the country, where there are pockets of people who have this Indian variant I think we should be nimble and we should be giving the vaccine to younger people in those areas. "Why? Because the early evidence is, if you receive the vaccine you are less likely to catch this variant, the spread is less serious but also the consequences should you catch are less serious as well.
"So I think we should be nimble. "And I have asked both Matt Hancock and Nadhim Zahawi, the vaccines minister, on Friday to give us the flexibility to give young people the vaccine in those part of London that are concerned about this strain."
