The TV presenter spoke on Good Morning Britain about the emotional moment when he came home to the family, calling it “amazing”. Kate shared the touching moment that Derek was able to finally return home saying: “As we pulled up, I was able to come home with him, I could see two little faces of Darcey and Billy looking out of the window and I could literally see them go, ‘He’s here!’ “They ran out and opened the door. He immediately burst into tears, there was a lot of hugging and got him inside. He absolutely knew he was home.” For more news and features about London directly to your inbox sign up to our newsletter here . The former lobbyist and political advisor was admitted to hospital on March 30, 2020 with breathing difficulties. His condition then worsened dramatically as he was ravaged by Covid-19. During his more than one year long stay in hospital, which has made him Britain’s longest Covid patient, he suffered a number of serious complications. Derek suffered kidney, pancreas and heart failure, damage to his liver, and holes in his lungs caused by bacterial pneumonia. Speaking of Derek’s condition Kate said: “He is responding all the time.
. It’s not like that. But he’s absolutely responding and aware where he is.
Derek was in hospital for over a year as seen in the ITV documentary Finding Derek
“There’s just been so many lovely little moments. I’ve been saying to him all the time in the coma, ‘When you get home you can have one of my casseroles’, which he loves by the way, that’s not a threat, because he can swallow a bit now. “So I said let’s see if we can get you round a table somehow with the four of us, so we sort of managed to do that. As I was laying out the plates I realised I was laying out the plates for four… makes me cry now. And it’s just, and Darcey was saying, ‘You’re going to put four spoons down’. I don’t know, it feels like the start of a huge chapter but a really, really big and important one.”
Kate continued: “It’s such a silly little thing [the four plates and spoons]... and then Billy was like, ‘Have we got enough mash?’ And I said ‘Yes, I don’t think Dad’s going to be eating so much’, he was suddenly remembering Dad’s old portions. “We weren’t all sitting around the dinner table, we constructed a version of it. He can’t really move. We do need a lot of help. And it’s not just help with looking after him, because it is 24-hour care, and I haven’t really slept as you can probably tell. “I will ease off, I’m just very aware at the moment and it’s a whole new team. So he’s probably got a little bit used to the people in hospital and so it’s a new team now that are working with him and helping him to come through.”
