According to a report by HullLive published in 2019, the killer was alone for more than two and a half hours in pain after he was left "laying in his own faeces, steadily deteriorating" following an abdominal aortic aneurism. In 2019, Hull Coroner’s Court heard how Nilsen was left in his cell at category A Full Sutton prison before an ambulance was called at around 7pm on May 10, 2018. The inquest also heard how Nilsen complained of "excruciating pain" from his abdomen at around 7am in the morning when he requested medical attention. Medical staff at the prison's health care unit wanted to keep him under observation at the medical bay, but Nilsen refused and went back to his cell.
