Breaking News ! A Video Assistant Referee was introduced to help officiate matches in the Premier League last season. Ahead of the campaign scores of rival fans suggested the introduction of VAR would harm 'lucky' Liverpool beyond all belief. What actually happened, though, was the polar opposite and the Reds romped home to a first top-flight title in 30 years after football resumed on June 17 following the spread of coronavirus, enforcement of lockdown and halt of football back in March. Here are the VAR facts The Video Assistant Referee could review goal/no goal, penalty/no penalty, direct red card and mistaken identity. The Premier League's introduction of VAR caused major debate among managers, players, journalists, fans and pundits alike last season. Arguments over what was or wasn't 'clear and obvious' raged on after refereeing decisions were made in scores of matches in the top flight. Across every team in the division, the video referee made 109 overturns of on-field decisions regarding goals or incidents according to ESPN. There were 27 goals awarded as a consequence while 56 lead to disallowed goals. By far the two teams that saw the most benefit from VAR last term were Brighton and Manchester United. The Old Trafford club, meanwhile, were involved in 13 overturn incidents - with 10 having gone in their favour while three went against them, to give them an overall positive net score of seven.

. Crystal Palace, Burnley, Newcastle and Southampton come next in the list with positive overturns scores of four, three, three and three respectively. Newcastle were the only side in the league not to have a VAR decision overturned against them. Then, in seventh place, came Liverpool who had a positive net score of two while Leicester City and Tottenham each saw a positive score of one and Manchester City came at even in 10th. Only once did the technological involvement lead to a goal for the European champions - against Wolves when Sadio Mane's effort was originally ruled out for an Adam Lallana handball before that decision was deemed to be incorrect. The VAR decisions have led to three goals being disallowed for Liverpool, against Manchester United twice and Watford, while four decisions have led to goals being ruled out for the opposing team in Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Manchester City. Elsewhere, Arsenal and Everton had a net overturn score of minus one, while Bournemouth, Chelsea and Watford each had a net score of minus two. Aston Villa and West Ham had net VAR overturn scores of minus three and minus four respectively, while Sheffiled United and Wolves sat on minus five and Norwich City were bottom of the overturn score table having gained a net of minus seven. There can be no debate about the fact VAR was brought in to be a fair and equal judge of all incidents with an aim to take everything into account to make a decision regardless of players or teams involved. And while any final decision made by the officiating team based in Stockley Park might not always be to everyone's liking, it will have been done without any hint of bias or prejudice while the actual bonuses gained by a lot of teams have been relatively minimal.
