MetiNews.Com - Knowsley is still the borough with the second highest coronavirus infection rate in the country
Breaking News ! More than 1,000 people caught Covid-19 in Knowsley this week as the borough was placed into Tier 3 lockdown. The borough’s infection rate passed 700 cases per 100,000 residents, the second highest in the country, while local public health chiefs warned increasing numbers of older people were catching the virus. Dr Sarah McNulty, the borough’s director of public health, has described the rise as “a grave concern”, with the rate of older people testing positive for the virus reaching 622 per 100,000 people at the end of last week. At the start of the month, that number was 342 per 100,000, showing cases in Knowsley are spreading beyond younger people and into more vulnerable populations. . She pointed to Kirkby, which has seen the highest Covid-19 rates in Knowsley with more than 1% of the population testing positive for coronavirus over last week. But Dr McNulty also warned the figures were likely to be an underestimate given the high proportion of tests coming back positive. She told the board: “We are likely to actually be missing some disease, our rates are likely to be an underestimate of what is actually out there.” Keep up to date with coronavirus cases in your area by adding your postcode below
While other areas with high infection rates have significant student populations, this is not the case in Knowsley where Dr McNulty suggested people being unable to work from home, relying on public transport and starting to mix more socially had contributed to the rapid rise in infections. Like the rest of the Liverpool City Region, Knowsley saw bars, pubs, gyms and betting shops close on Wednesday as part of Tier 3 restrictions designed to slow the spread of the virus. Council leader Graham Morgan said the stricter measures were necessary, but joined other local leaders in calling for more financial support to businesses and residents affected by the lockdown. Opposition councillors, however, accused the metro mayor and council leaders of not putting up enough of a fight, and warned that parts of the borough may “never recover” from the lockdown.

The government appeared to give those opposition councillors more ammunition on Friday after announcing that gyms could remain open in neighbouring Lancashire despite also placing the county into Tier 3 restrictions. Cllr Morgan also questioned the decision, calling for more evidence and adding: “This tiered system was supposed to ensure clarity and fairness. “It hasn’t taken long for that particular Government pledge to be tossed aside. Without urgent clarity on this matter the whole approach is dangerously undermined.”
