Breaking News ! The redevelopment of a much-loved former butchers which was wiped out in a devastating gas explosion has taken a big step forward. As part of plans to regenerate New Ferry, the Wirral town which was devastated by Pascal Blasio’s deliberate blowing up of his furniture store in March 2017, the former Griffiths butchers will be demolished next week. Griffiths', at 68-72 Bebington Road, was directly opposite the blast site. More than 41 months ago the property was damaged beyond repair and the popular business never reopened. Next Monday, September 21, the building is set to be finally demolished, clearing the site for development. Wirral Council acquired the building earlier this year after a long, drawn out process and the site now forms one of three areas earmarked for development which had outline planning permission approved two weeks ago. Plans for a mixture of residential and retail units were approved.

. Across the three sites the plan is to build up to 79 new residential units, a mixture of two and three-bedroom houses and one and two-bedroom apartments, as well as more than 1,000 square metres of retail floorspace. Details of each proposed development are as follows: Woodhead Street car park and land at New Chester Road Up to 15 houses (including eight two-bedroom and seven three-bedroom) Up to 30 apartments (including 12 one-bedroom and 18 two-bedroom) Retention of 70 public car parking spaces on Woodhead Street car park New access point to the site from New Chester Road Read More Related Articles Six by Nico closes and then reopens with new team after positive covid case Read More Related Articles Seventh Wirral pub closes after staff member tests coronavirus positive Land at Bebington Road Development of up to 540 square metres of retail floorspace Up to 23 apartments (including 16 one-bedroom and seven two-bedroom) Retention of eight public car parking spaces on Grove Road Primary access point to the site from the existing access point off Grove Road Land at Boundary Lane (explosion site) Development of up to 480 square metres of retail floorspace Up to 11 apartments above (including nine one-bedroom and two two-bedroom) Cllr Pat Hackett, leader of Wirral Council, said: “New Ferry is one of Wirral Council’s major priorities – even more so since that devastating night in March 2017. “It has been, however, a very complex process to get to the position we are now in, which is a significant milestone for the redevelopment plans.” Keep up to date with plans in your area by adding your postcode below Explaining what the granting of outline planning permission achieves, Cllr Hackett added: “[The approval] will allow us to present three separate areas of land – including those sites most badly affected by the explosion – to developers and will allow the council to move forward with the acquisition of those properties still in private-ownership, by compulsory purchase if necessary. “We have ambitious plans for the town and I’m pleased that the patience of residents, business owners and visitors to New Ferry will soon be rewarded.”
