Breaking News ! Mark Labbett is best known for his role as a quiz master on ITV's The Chase. But despite being a familiar face on our TV screens each week, many of us don't know about his life before the show including his first TV debut in 1999. Mark, aka 'The Beast', appeared on The Chase when it first aired in 2009 and has continued to stay on the show since then, having also appeared on both US and Australian versions. So it may come as no surprise that he has also been a contestant on a whole host of different quiz shows, from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to Mastermind. However, there's a lot more to Mark than meets the eye, from a job at Butlins to his incredible 10 stone weight loss, Devon Live reports. Here we take a look at Mark's career and his life both on and off-screen. Upbringing Mark was born in 1965 to Jon and Carolyn Labbett in Tiverton along with his two younger brothers Paul and Phillip. He moved to Monmouthshire in 1998 and then to Newport in 2003. Initially, Mark was a supply teacher in maths and P.E in secondary schools which includes Cove School in Farnborough and at Caldicot School in South Wales. He went to both Exeter College in Oxford where he received a Master of Arts degree in mathematics. Along with this, he got his legal CPE and LPC qualifications from the University of South Wales, formally known as the University of Glamorgan. He moved to Rotherham in 2013 where he currently lives with his adorable pet retriever after splitting from wife Katie last year. Quizzing and TV It wasn't until Mark was working at popular holiday park Butlins that his interest in quizzing started. He would boost his income from his winnings from the quiz machines on the site. Mark told The Guardian in 2007: " I really enjoyed playing and it was also lucrative. At the beginning of the week I banked my £55 wage, except for £3 or £4 which I played on the machines. By the end of the week, I'd have £200 in coins." He started to become extremely knowledgeable on trivia and wrote questions for quiz company a Redtooth. His first TV appearance was when he went on Mastermind in 1999 with his specialist subject being the Olympic games. A year later he was on the show again with his specialist subject now being the popular TV show The Simpsons. In the same year he also competed on Countdown, however, he lost after his first game. . Mark continued to star in many game shows such as BrainTeaser where he won £500 and then £1,500 a year later on SUDO-Q. He also took away a whopping £32,000 after going on Millionaire Live, the live version of the show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Mark's quizzing knowledge resulted in him being ranked as the 17th top quizzer in the country in 2007. Other shows he's appeared on include University Challenge and Are you an Egghead? Then in 2009, he joined the cast of ITV's new show 'The Chase'. Every chaser on the show is given a nickname with Mark being known as 'The Beast'. His name is referring to both his size at 6ft 6in and his last name as Labbett sounds like the French la bête, meaning "the beast". Mark is also the only chaser on the show to appear on the US version of the game show along with being on the Australian Chase with Anne Hegerty and Shaun Wallace. Although the quizzer is extremely quick and seems to know pretty much everything, he's admitted that his weak subjects are horse racing and soap operas. However, it wasn't until they were both married that they came to the realisation that they were related. Mark's dad and Katie's dad are both first cousins which make the couple second cousins. Speaking to Loose Women, Mark said: "It wasn't something we were aware of at the time - it was one of those things that happened." The pair met through mutual friends and tied the knot four years after meeting. Although in 2019 it came to light that Katie, who is 27 years younger than Mark had been having an affair for over the year, sources claim. Katie, 28 had been seeing a 30-year-old man called Scott who she had been on trips away with and introduced to his friends. It wasn't until Scott's friends saw a clip of Katie with Mark on Loose Women that thay made the connection she was married to the quizzer. Despite the affair coming out, the pair decided to give it another go with Mark stating the pair were going through a 'rough patch'. However, in August 2020 the couple announced that they were officially splitting from each other due to covid-19 and their age difference. Weight loss Mark has lost an incredible ten stone in total (Image: ITV) Over the past year, Mark, 55, who is nicknamed The Beast, has been showcasing his incredible ten stone weight loss on social media. In 2003, Mark tipped the scales at 29 stone, but after shedding the pounds, he now weighs in at an impressive 19 stone. Discussing his jaw-dropping transformation on Loose Women, Mark said he hopes to 'squeeze into' size XL trousers. Mark said: "I gradually dropped X's off my size. "I went from 5XL to 4XL and it looks like the next time I go shopping I'll be able to squeeze into XL pants. "Small things but important things." Mark said before leaving full-time teaching in 2003 he weighed 29 stone. He said he was on the verge of being put on blood pressure tablets before changing his lifestyle. Mark said: "I've been mostly about 25 [stone] to 26, up until lockdown and the weight has just fallen off."
