Breaking News ! A man attacked with a machete on the doorstep of a restaurant remains in hospital with serious injuries to his arm and hand. The man, aged in his 50s, was attacked on a doorstep by the Casa Italia restaurant on Bold Street, Southport, at around 5pm yesterday. According to a nearby business owner, the attack was believed to have been carried out by a group of "up to five men" who injured the victim and fled the scene. The man said that a staff member working yesterday evening, on January 13, had heard a loud bang, thought to be the weapon used in the attack. According to police, the injured man did not call an ambulance but instead went directly to hospital with wounds to his arm and hand. In an update today Merseyside Police said the man remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Officers cordoned off a section of Bold Street while forensic specialists examined the scene yesterday and CCTV and witness enquiries have also been carried out. Speaking shortly after the incident, Chief Inspector Simon Owen said: “We’re keen to speak to anyone who saw this incident or has heard any information since. "At this stage it is unclear exactly what happened but believe the victim was attacked at the door of a home near to the junction of Lord Street and Bold Street, before being brought into hospital.
