Breaking News ! Toronto signed Liverpool defender Tony Gallacher on loan in September despite initially scouting his team-mate Adam Lewis. Gallacher went on to make 10 appearances in the MLS while having to deal with the coronavirus pandemic - which forced him to quarantine alone for a fortnight upon arrival - and a temporary stadium move for his new club to comply with travel restrictions. Toronto took up base in Hartford, Connecticut across the border in the United States meaning the 21-year-old former Falkirk left-back - who signed for Liverpool in 2018 - barely experienced living in Canada. But Toronto head of scouting operations Jack Dodd, who worked as a scout at Liverpool between 2008-2013 and struck up a relationship with current assistant sporting director Julian Ward, explained Gallacher was not his initial target. Dodd told the ECHO: "In the middle of last year, our left-back had a couple of injury issues so we wanted to go and get cover for the back-end of the season. "We were going along quite nicely in terms of where we were in the league and wanted to make sure we were covered and not stretched too thin going into the pay-offs. "But we're a salary-cap league, we we didn't have a ton of money to spend. "Going out and making a transfer, to buy someone, was pretty much impossible, and we didn't feel we had anyone internally at the club, in terms of young players from the academy, who were there to fill-in, so we decided to look for a loan." On this occasion, the wrong man was the right move. Dodd continued: "I contacted Julian to see what was available, and he mentioned Adam Lewis. "We looked at him and he was out of our budget, but through looking at him, I looked at the rest of the under-23s and looked at Tony as well. I went back to Julian, and he mentioned Tony, and it went from there." Gallacher went unbeaten in his first six appearances for Toronto, helping them into the MLS Cup play-offs where they eventually lost to Nashville SC during extra-time in the round of 16, where the Scottish youth international appeared as a substitute. But Dodd praised the impact of the starlet, who has made three appearances for Liverpool under-23s since returning at the end of December, highlighting a 'world-class' assist that sealed three points against Philadelphia in October. Liverpool also requested continued analysis on Gallacher, with monthly written feedback from head coach Greg Vanney submitted alongside sports science data. "It was impressive, I have to say!" Dodd said of the meticulous approach from Merseyside. He was exactly what we hoped for. We brought him in to be cover, but thought he would get some games as well, and that is exactly what happened.

. But equal credit goes to his character. He was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. "Obviously it wasn't ideal, coming here alone, leaving his girlfriend at home, a two week initial quarantine period by himself, couldn't see much of the city and things like that, but he took it all in his stride really well. "Everyone at the club loved him. The people around the club, the players, the coaching staff, they all loved him. All the staff have spoken highly of him since, so full credit to him in every aspect really." Gallacher made his Liverpool first-team debut in December 2019 during the Carabao Cup quarter-final exit to Aston Villa and remained coy on his future while in Canada. Dodd told the ECHO he will keep the full-back on his transfer shortlist and also hopes to conduct further business with Liverpool in the future. He continued: "Tony is a player we will continue to watch, yeah. The salary cap doesn't always make it so easy to say, 'Hey, we want to go and sign this guy!' and then we go and sign him. It's quite a balancing act. "But if the stars align, he is definitely someone we are going to keep our eye on for something more permanent in the future." Dodd added: "It's certainly a relationship I hope to build on with Liverpool and I would hope Julian felt the same. I would hope Tony's feedback on the club is positive. "It would have been great if he could have experienced living, training and playing in Toronto but we spent almost his entire time at the club playing out of Hartford, Connecticut last year, which wasn't really ideal. "It would have been great to showcase the club better so Tony could have went back to Liverpool and feed back on his experience, but I would hope being around the staff and things like that was positive. "I would hope from Liverpool's perspective we gave him enough football for it to be positive to his development and it is definitely something I'd like to keep open."
