The Baggies had been awarded a penalty after Bruno Fernandes caught Conor Gallagher in the box shortly after half-time, only for referee Coote to be sent to the screen to rewatch the incident. After reviewing the incident, Coote overturned his decision and could be heard saying 'played the ball'. "From my personal opinion, I do think it was a foul and I don't think it will be overturned."

After Coote opted to overturn the decision, Walton voiced his shock at the situation, arguing it was a misuse of VAR. "I'm very surprised, I'm very surprised VAR even asked him to look for a second opinion," he said. "I don't think it's a clear and obvious error from the referee and, bearing in mind VAR is here to make sure clear and obvious errors are detected, not to get a particular decision correct. "I'm a bit surprised."
