When compared to the England average of 618.06 cases per 100,000 population, Knowsley has an infection rate of 1399.3 for the week ending January 9. There were 2,111 positive tests in Knowsley in that week - which is 909 more than the previous week, an increase of 76 per cent. Knowsley now has the second highest infection rate in the country. Earlier in the week, the borough of Knowsley was reported to have a reproduction rate ('R' rate) of 2.4, which means that the spread of the disease would be increasing significantly.

The ECHO reported yesterday that more recent, daily numbers did suggest the rate was beginning to stabilise and fall slightly, in a sign of hope for the region.
