MetiNews.Com - Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for United States forward Christian Pulisic in 2018 - but he eventually signed for Chelsea
Breaking News ! Jurgen Klopp has long been an admirer of Christian Pulisic - so much so that links between the United States forward Liverpool have resurfaced ahead of the summer transfer window. It's already over two years since Chelsea splashed out £58million to sign Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund, where he joined the academy, aged 15, while the charismatic German was in charge of the first-team. Pulisic was, of course, was sent back on loan to the Bundesliga before eventually arriving at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2019. Before that deal, speculation was rife over a possible switch to Anfield instead - but Klopp stopped short of signing a highly-rated prospect that he knew well. "I like him and it's not like that could be the problem. We respect contracts still and there is no market that I know about in the moment. "I known him since he was a kid, he's still not really old. He's a fantastic player. It's deserved that people think highly of him in America and, in Germany, it's the same. "If he wants to play in England one day or whatever he, for sure, has the chance to do so.
. But why, exactly, was that the case? On the back of that painstaking defeat to Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final, Liverpool's potent front three - Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino - took their game and goalscoring exploits to dizzy new heights as the club hit back with their sixth European crown 12 months later, followed of course by the memorable, maiden Premier League title. With those three at the forefront, Klopp wanted to strengthen his back-up options ahead of 2018/2019.

However, instead of targeting Pulisic - who commanded a huge fee for someone who would likely to have played second fiddle, at least in the first instance - the manager set his sights on Xherdan Shaqiri. Available for just a quarter of the price, the Swiss provided back-up in several positions and also helped to free up precious funds that were used to land Alisson and Virgil van Dijk. Despite this season's struggles - although a top-four finish remains a possibility - Klopp's stance during that transfer summer window was, almost immediately, vindicated.

Pulisic has since shown glimpses of the ability that led Chelsea to stump up the cash, but the American, 22, is by no means a stand-out under recently-appointed Thomas Tuchel - another man with Dortmund connections. He started and scored during the eye-catching defeat to West Brom on Easter Sunday. However, that was only the second time that Pulisic - capped 36 times by the United States - was handed a place in the Chelsea line-up for Premier League duty since Tuchel replaced Blues' legend Frank Lampard back in January.
