MetiNews.Com - Mayor Rotheram also blasted Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove saying he 'does not know what he's talking about'
Breaking News ! Gyms in the Liverpool City Region could be reopened in a matter of weeks if the government fails to provide evidence for their closure, Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram said today. The regional leader has faced some criticism after the government’s new coronavirus Tier 3 restrictions included the forced closure of all gyms in the region. Local anger intensified when it was revealed that Lancashire’s Tier 3 package did not include the closure of gyms – with no government explanation for the disparity. But speaking to the ECHO today, Mayor Rotheram again confirmed that neither he nor any of the region’s leaders requested gym closures as part of the deal, despite this narrative again being pushed by Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove on television this morning. And he said if the government fails to provide evidence for why the closures of gyms would be conducive to the region’s coronavirus fight, local leaders may take action. The new restrictions are due to be reviewed a month after first being brought in and Mayor Rotheram said: “I’ve said to them now that if they can’t provide the science for us, in the next three weeks, then we will take a decision after the first review period and if they can’t provide the evidence then it will be for local discretion and we will decide whether to reopen the gyms.” Responding to Mr Gove, who claimed on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show this morning that the Liverpool City Region leaders requested the closure of gyms, the Metro Mayor added: “I’ve met Michael Gove, if he tells me his name is Michael Gove I’d want to see his passport to prove it. . “There’s not a chance that any of us ever requested or suggested that gyms should be part of the package, we were told these were the restrictions for our area, no ifs or buts, this was Tier 3. “So, Michael Gove needs to retract that, he wasn’t at those talks, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about – I can confirm 100% that no one here asked for gyms to be closed.” Keep up to date with coronavirus cases in your area by adding your postcode below:
Mayor Rotheram also provided a glimmer of hope for the region, stating that if everyone pulls together to drive down infection numbers, there could be better news for Christmas. He said: “This is where the people of our region can really help us, if we start to see those numbers fall considerably, we just might be able to come out of Tier 3 into 2 for Christmas. That’s a tall order, but that’s the prize. “So, we could potentially have something closer to a normal Christmas if we bring those numbers down, while other areas may be going into that higher tier. “It’s about everyone pulling in the same direction, showing that solidarity we are famous for and seeing if we can achieve this very difficult ask.”
