Breaking News ! 1622695846">Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Leon Balogun with the Rangers defender set to extend his stay at Ibrox. The former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 32-year-old has been “superb” this season and has shown exemplary attitude and character throughout his time at the club. Football Insider has learned of a one-year extension clause in the centre-half’s contract which will be triggered by a set number of appearances this term. Balogun has made 23 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side this season, including an unfamiliar start at right-back in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Dundee United. When asked for his assessment of the Nigeria international’s first season at Ibrox, Whelan told Football Insider: “Balogun has been superb. “He has shown the right attitude and the right character since he has arrived to Ibrox.

“He deserves a new contract. A lot of the young players have come on leaps and bounds this season, they have been a breath of fresh air and the likes of Balogun have taken responsibility on their shoulders at times.
“There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he is worth the extension.”
Balogun has spent most of his career at centre-back but is expected to continue to deputise at right-back while James Tavernier is out injured.
