Breaking News ! Police are investigating after fascist and racist posters were put up around Penzance. It comes after an anti-fascist group posted pictures showing the offensive posters on Facebook. Some of the material, which CornwallLive has chosen not to publish, included Nazi symbols and conspiracy theories claiming the Holocaust "didn't happen but should have". They also asked people to bin their masks, show their faces and put an end to the national lockdown to stop the spread of Covid-19. Councillor Tim Dwelly, the Cornwall Council representative for Penzance East, said police are making good progress investigating those responsible. He said: "This has to stop. I am pleased to report that the police are making good progress investigating the people behind this vile racist material. Counter-terrorism are involved. “To see stickers saying the Holocaust 'didn't happen but should have' with an accompanying swastika proves that this is serious. “Penzance is a welcoming and tolerant town. Many local people have relatives who died fighting fascism within living memory. “If anyone knows who might be responsible for this please can they contact the police. “I have also asked the council to remove all this hate material. If you see any please also report it to the council immediately." . You can read more about that here. A spokesman for the police force said: "Devon & Cornwall Police take all reports of hate crime seriously. Hate crime seeks to target someone’s personal identity whether it be their race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, disability or transgender status. As such this type of crime can have a significant and often devastating impact on a victim, their family and the wider community. “Hate crime is any crime type where the victim or anyone else perceives that the victim has been targeted through hostility or prejudice based on their actual or perceived personal identity. This type of offending includes online hate. “Each incident reported to the police will be assessed, recorded and investigated as appropriate. Where a hate crime is committed this will be investigated in line with the wishes of a victim, and support offered according to an individual’s needs whilst seeking to understand the impact of that crime. “A hate incident is one where the criminal threshold is not met, and the individual circumstances of such an incident will dictate our response which must be proportionate in line with the Human Rights Act. “We acknowledge that hate crime is under reported and we encourage victims and witnesses to report hate crime using the various reporting methods available below.” The True Vision website contains useful information about hate crime including online hate. It also has a facility for third party reporting. There is further support also available through Stop Hate UK with an additional third party reporting facility.
