Breaking News ! Long queues of dozens of people, excited punters waiting for their first Spoons breakfast, and a mad rush as the doors finally opened at 8am. This was not the reality of the reopening of Truro’s Wetherspoon, Try Dowr, this morning - whose social distance markings outside the front door went almost entirely unused in the runup to its opening time. Today sees the almost total reopening of the hospitality industry, with pubs and restaurants finally allowed to serve inside for the first time in Cornwall since 2020. Pubs have been allowed to serve outside for more than a month now, but Truro’s only Wetherspoon opted to remain shut until inside service could resume as lockdown eases further today. However, Despite residents of the city’s lack of access to a Spoons over the past nearly half a year, Try Dowr swung open its doors at 8am this morning to not much fanfare. By 7.30am, no one had showed up, with bar staff seen inside getting the pub ready for a potentially busy day. A few passersby seemed tempted to queue up, as they came up to the pub’s front door and looked over the display menu and opening times. None of them stuck around in chilly, windy Lemon Quay for their chance at a cheap pint, though, and they wandered off to Panmere Market and elsewhere on the square. Another couple turned up at around 7.45am, again nosing over the opening times and menu outside.

. Time passed, however, and no queue materialised, unlike last summer where the reopening of Wetherspoons across the country - including Truro - was clearly something more to celebrate for a lot of people. At just a few minutes to go, another few people came up to the pub, before wandering back off again, leaving the couple to patiently wait behind the yellow queue lines on the floor on their own. The socially-distanced floor markings lay behind them, empty, winding around the side of the pub. This is in sharp contrast to the reopening of Primark last month, where dozens of people waited outside from around 6:30am for the clothes store to reopen. Primark even opened a few minutes early for the eager shoppers who had turned up for the shop’s 7am opening time. No such luck for the Spoons punters, who had to wait until the official opening time to be let in. Wetherspoon is not the only pub to resume business today in Truro, with the remaining gardenless boozers in the city finally allowed to open once more. Today also marks the first day that inside mixing is allowed in other people’s homes, with the return of a rule of six in most instances. Weddings, funerals, and wakes are now allowed to host up to 30 people - and large outdoor sporting events will be starting again.
