Breaking News ! A park and ride car park in Truro which has been taken over by Travellers has been closed to the public. More than 20 Traveller caravans have parked across Tregurra Park and Ride, next to the city’s Waitrose store, having arrived on Friday evening. A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said it was working quickly to resolve the issue. They said: “Officers will be visiting the site on Monday morning to assess the situation and establish whether the group intend to move on voluntarily. “The council has legal powers to require unauthorised encampments to leave council land through a court order where necessary." Bus drivers at the park and ride office told CornwallLive that motorists using the car park had complained about the travellers’ presence with many being “hassled” for money by children and feeling intimidated. Staff had to explain they were powerless to do anything and that the travellers’ sudden appearance had been reported to landowners Cornwall Council and Devon and Cornwall Police, who said they would investigate. The bus staff added they were concerned that they could run over children who were running around the park and ride area. This is a public car park, not a Gypsy caravan site. It appears they can do anything they like. What happens if we run one of them over?” When CornwallLive approached one of the traveller community to ask how long they intended to be on the car park, he came towards us with a fist raised and swore at us to leave the site and never return, despite it being a public car park.

. The closure may extend longer. The council spokesperson said: “Tregurra Park and Ride will not be open on Monday.. People intending to travel by car to Truro are encouraged to make alternative arrangements where possible, making use of the Park & Ride at Langarth, which will be operating a partial service into the city centre looping around Victoria Square. Motorists may also wish to use city centre car parks but these are likely to be busy. “It is suggested that residents intending to use the Tregurra Park and Ride to catch a bus to Tresliske Hospital access the bus service at Victoria Square or at the Langarth Park and Ride." Cornwall Council has offered Royal Cornwall Hospital staff travelling from the east of Truro the option to park in the visitor car parks at County Hall and pick up the bus at the park and ride stops there. Buses will loop through Truro stopping at the Royal Cornwall Museum in River Street and Victoria Square stops only. Updates on advice for motorists will be posted on the council’s website.
