Breaking News ! Wetherspoon has been given the go ahead to create a swanky rooftop terrace at a Cornwall pub. The popular pub chain has been hoping for its Falmouth pub, The Packet Station, to get a rooftop for years. And now it is finally possible - three years after Cornwall Council refused a previous planning application and an appeal was dismissed. The plans first emerged in the summer 2017 when KD Paine and Associates Ltd submitted a planning application on behalf of the chain. The establishment, located on the Moor, said the space was “underused” and home to “unsightly” ducting and ventilation equipment. Cornwall Council’s planning department however refused the application in January 2018, saying it would “generate noise disturbance” from customers and refrigeration equipment. An appeal was made in March, which was also dismissed. Inspector John Wilde said at the time: “I cannot accept that local residents would not be subjected to a significant adverse effect from the noise produced, even with the proposed screening in place." JD Wetherspoon made another attempt in March 2020, with a new planning application, and has now been successful. The chain received conditional planning permission from Cornwall Council's planners today (Tuesday, February 23). The conditions state that the terrace cannot be used between 7pm and 9.

. The local authority has also asked Wetherspoon to provide plans for external lighting which will be used on the terrace as they will have to be given approval in writing. You can read all the conditions here. The planning application reads: "The area of the additional terrace is currently an unused flat roof area accessible only for maintenance access and for the mounting of mechanical services. "The area newly created would be wholly ancillary to the main use of the building as a public house, and access would be through the public house only. "On the new terrace there will be no public address system, no live or piped music of any kind. The only means of access will be through the existing public house. This ensures full control of the use and access remains with the public house management. "Supervision of the area will be enhanced by use of an extended CCTV system. Hours of use will be as currently permitted for the existing public house."
