Breaking News ! A burglar who stole nearly £10,000 worth of bikes from a well-known Cornish cycle shop has avoided jail despite having “a horrible record”. Stephen Pope, 41, was part of a gang who travelled from the Midlands to raid Clive Mitchell Cycles at Summercourt. Pope, from Birmingham, appeared at Truro Crown Court for sentence having pleaded guilty to burglary. Prosecuting the case, Deni Matthews described how on June 10 2019 the owner of Clive Mitchell was alerted to the alarm at the premises going off. Police attended and found that a large section of glass from the window had been broken and seven mountain bikes worth £9,573 stolen. The broken glass was valued at £5,000. Officers identified the vehicle involved and police colleagues on the M5 were able to stop a stolen van at Michael Wood services. Pope was the front seat passenger and accompanied by three other people. Pope initially denied being involved, saying he didn’t know the bikes were in the van or that the van had been stolen. However, he was eventually linked to the crime scene by his footwear and fleece.

. The bikes were subsequently recovered and the other suspects are either on the run or in the court system yet to be sentenced. Representing Pope, Chris Nicholls told the court Pope had a history of drug use and was exploited to take part in the Clive Mitchell raid which he is said to not remember. Clive Mitchell Cycles in Summercourt Sentencing, Judge Robert Linford said: “You were part of a group of people who burgled a cycle. You were caught and the bikes recovered. With your background that is remarkable.” Pope was given a 10 month sentence, suspended for two years.
