Breaking News ! Holidaymakers have been shocked by the presence of face masks in Cornwall on a daily basis, a restaurant in Newquay has revealed. Protective coverings were made mandatory in shops, supermarkets, shopping centres and enclosed transport hubs across the country on July 24. Despite this, WAX at Watergate Bay claims that visitors to the county have repeatedly made comments about masks - particularly when worn by their waiting staff. A post on the WAX Facebook page stated: "Since we reopened our team hear this on a daily occurrence... "'Oh you're wearing mask. We left X City to get away from all of that!' "It shocks us that anyone would take offence to our staff wanting to help protect our customers from COVID. "But regardless of this feedback (from a very small percent of our customers) we will be wearing mask for the foreseeable future. It just makes sense. "Plus we think it looks cool." Locals took to Facebook to support the message, with one commenting: "Good on you! My son is working in another pub in Newquay and I really, really wish they were wearing masks! "I personally would feel much more reassured in a pub where the staff are taking things seriously. Good luck.

." A third posted: "Thank you Wax. This is to protect all of us, customers and staff. "Like you, I hear visitors saying (when asked to use hand sanitiser) 'Oh, I came on holiday to escape from all that'. "There is no escape." Another local resident said: "My wife works at Morrisons in Newquay. They say the same rubbish there too." It comes as Boris Johnson encouraged staycations across the country earlier this week. He said: "There are all sorts of fantastic destinations, the best in the world, I would say. "All my happiest holiday memories are of holiday vacations here in the UK, bucket-and-spade jobs or whatever, and I thoroughly, thoroughly recommend it, and I'm sure that people will have a great time over the summer." Visit Cornwall chief executive Malcolm Bell recently revealed that campsites are fully booked and that anyone coming to Cornwall without a booking was unlikely to find accommodation. However he stressed that while the campsites are booked up, they are not operating at full capacity to ensure they can follow social distancing guidelines.
