Breaking News ! Fifty firefighters are tackling a blaze which destroyed part of a creative hub in Redruth on Sunday morning. Crews arrived in the Blowinghouse Hill area at approximately 6:30am (May 16) where a fire had broken out at Krowji, Cornwall's largest creative hub which provides studios for a range of creative businesses. Cornwall Fire and Rescue Services confirmed eight appliances were at the scene trying to extinguish the blaze from Tolvaddon, Falmouth, Hayle, Truro, Helston, Penzance and Perranporth. Devon and Cornwall Police were also in attendance to assist with a number of road closures in the area. There are no reported casualties. Group Manager Ian Neal told CornwallLive that he expects fire crews to be on site all day, and there were gas cylinders and other fire hazards in the building. An employee told Cornwall Live reporter Lee Trewhela, who is at the scene, that there is extensive damage to the middle part of the building, which contains offices and workshops for some of the smaller tenants. Lee added: "They think other parts of the building have smoke damage." A number of residents spotted the blaze and have shared their despair at the news. One local said: "I kept smelling smoke in the house and checked every room. I thought that a crazy neighbour was having a bonfire at half seven in the morning, in the rain. The news about the Krowji is awful.

A JustGiving page has already been set up by Charlie Coleman, who owned The Melting Pot cafe at Krowji for its last three years before it closed down. Many of these tenants will have just lost artwork to not just the fire, but smoke and water too. "Art is not something a simple small insurance check can solve, and many will have lost work that may have taken months if not years to produce, and would thus have now lost their livelihood. Fire at the Krowji, Redruth (Image: Jodie Edwards) "Krowji will be well known to many art fans for organising and being at the centre of Cornwall's annual Open Studios event, where artists across the county open up the private studios and homes to the public to come in and see inside their lives (and heads too) and possibly, especially for the artists, buy some artwork too. "Having owned The Melting Pot cafe at Krowji for its last three years before it closed down, I had the pleasure and privilege to serve and make friends with many of the tenants and I know this has come as a crippling blow to some who have already suffered from not just the problems of Covid, but also drastic cuts in financial support for the art community. "So I ask if you can help too, even if it's just the price of your next coffee." Click here to donate. You can recap our live blog of the fire here.
