Breaking News ! The owners of a fish and chip restaurant in Cornwall are so appalled by the meagre portions in lockdown food parcels that they’ve decided to offer everything on the menu to eligible children. Food parcels have been sent to pupils in England who would normally be eligible for free school meals during the Covid lockdown. However, even Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed that images shared online of inadequate food hampers by concerned parents were a “disgrace, and clearly do not meet the standards for free school meals”. Worried parents shared pictures of potatoes and cans of beans, a loaf of bread and a block of cheese or boxes of cold chips after expecting enough food for a week's worth of lunches. Many had also been sent five bottles of water, despite being able to give their children water from the tap. Now David and Amy Burns, who run Lemon Quay Chippy in Truro, have decided to offer everything on the menu free to children who would be eligible for free school meals. Amy told Cornwall Live: “We were appalled by the packages that were being offered.” David added: “What they were offering them to eat for five days wouldn’t last me a day, let alone a kid with an appetite. I can’t see kids go hungry. I’m offering anything they want really – a hot meal and a drink. “It doesn’t cost a lot to give them sausage and chips, does it? They don’t have to prove that they’re on benefits or anything else as that’s just embarrassing for them.” David and Amy Burns have run Lemon Quay Chippy since May last year The couple have run their chippy takeaway on the piazza since May last year and have installed partitions and social distancing measures in their shipping container restaurant. They also offered a free school meals option last year but have increased the offer following the controversial food parcels.

. “It looked like the Government were providing jobs for the boys. It would cost less than £3 to provide what was in some of those boxes. “For what it costs us, it’s worth doing – the fryers are already on, a bag of potatoes costs £7, a bag of sausages costs £7 …. I cannot see kids going hungry.” The passionate chippy owner added: “When I was a kid I was starving all the time – I couldn’t have survived on what they were getting. God, I could eat … and kids do! What good’s bread and jam – they need something hot to eat.” The couple only decided yesterday (Wednesday, January 13) to do their bit, so they now want to get the word out. “I was watching the news and had a bit of a meltdown,” said David, who “loves fish and chips” and decided to open his own business when he ended up binning a portion he bought from another chippy in Cornwall, thinking he could do better. The Lemon Quay chippy serves fresh home made and hand cut chips, batter made to David's own recipe, and offers a full menu of cod, sausage, nuggets, fishcake and cheesy chips. The Government has now revealed that free school meal vouchers will return next week following the food box debacle. David said: “Vouchers is all well and good but some of these kids’ parents have problems and can’t get to a supermarket, so what will it cost me to give them sausage and chips? “I’d rather give it away than see it go to waste.”
