Breaking News ! Fears that Warrington may be heading for a local lockdown are increasing following a recent surge in coronavirus cases. In just two days there has been a further 69 individual lab confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Cheshire town. The infection rate is also rising and the town is now one of England's top 10 hotspots for the virus. Latest Government figures show there have been 1,781 positive cases of the virus in Warrington, as of Wednesday, September 16 at 4.12pm. It's a rise of 69 compared to Monday's cases which totalled 1,712. Warrington's infection rate has also increased from 815.2 per 100,000 of the population to 848. . "We think we might be going the way that Bolton and other areas have gone, and that is a local lockdown. "We proactively met with the joint bio-security centre and we are awaiting decisions from Whitehall and that is going to happen probably on Thursday (today). "We may just get told on Thursday or beyond that they are going to do what they did in Bolton and Manchester. I think it's more likely than not. "I'm hoping it won't be a closure of pubs and business, I am hoping for something a little less draconian, maybe a curfew or something. "I can't see it happening." Yesterday, (September 16) marked the first day in 11 days that a Cheshire NHS Trust recorded a coronavirus-related death. Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sadly recorded one patient fatality from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours on Wednesday. The trust now has a total of 139 patient deaths from coronavirus - they last reported a death on September 5.
