MetiNews.Com - The pub has seen a rise in 'unacceptable behaviour' and 'drug use'
Breaking News ! A Cheshire pub, hoping to improve its family-friendly image has become an over-21s venue after seeing a rise in 'unacceptable behaviour' and drug use. The Cheshire Tavern, in Congleton, is the latest boozer to bring in the new rule which means anyone under the age of 21 will only be allowed in if they are having a meal. The watering-hole on West Rd has taken action ahead of pubs being able to let customers inside for the first time in months from tomorrow (May 17) Stoke-on-Trent Live reports In a post on social media, The Cheshire Tavern said: "Unfortunately going forward The Cheshire Tavern will now be a 21+ venue for drinking. "If you are attending for a meal then exceptions will be made but for casual drinking we will no longer be serving tables consisting of under-21s. "This is due to numerous occasions of completely unacceptable behaviour, people attempting underage drinking and we have noticed a significant increase in drug use amongst the age group of 18 to 21 and this is completely unacceptable and we will not tolerate this." The post goes on to say: "The Cheshire Tavern is a calm and relaxed environment for families to meet and enjoy time together. So we hate to put this measure in place but for the foreseeable future this will be now be in practice. "Staff have now been instructed to vigilantly practice the Challenge 25 Rules and please do not be offended or embarrassed if asked for ID. As always we retain our right to refuse service to anyone.
." The decision has broadly been welcomed. One regular said: "What a brave decision you’ve made. Thank you for keeping your customers and staff safe."
Another added: "You have to do what you feel is right for your pub and your staff. "It is, however, a real shame for those younger people that have enjoyed coming for a drink and no longer will be allowed to through the behaviour of others in their age bracket group. "My son and his mates are a really nice group of sensible lads who'll no longer be able to pop in for a drink as they have been doing. "Drug misuse is definitely a problem and rife in the older age bracket of 30 plus but they must be better at hiding it and therefore getting away with it."
