Breaking News ! Chester Zoo bosses have said they estimate an £11.5million income loss due to lockdown, but said they are "relieved" at a prospective opening date. On Monday, Boris Johnson announced in his roadmap plan to ending lockdown, that outdoor settings such as zoos could open on April 12. The four-step plan gives a guide to how we will come out of Covid-19 restrictions, but the Prime Minister stressed that any lifting of restrictions will be based on data and not dates. In a statement to CheshireLive, Jamie Christon the chief operating officer at Chester Zoo, said several months of closure has had a "huge impact" on the zoo. He added that visitor ticket sales make up 97% of the charity's income and so they are currently "relieved to now have a prospective date to work towards reopening." Jamie said: "There is no denying that the several months of closure have had a huge impact on our charity zoo. "Visitor ticket sales make up 97% of our income and so we’re relieved to now have a prospective date to work towards reopening our 125 acres of zoological gardens, so that we can continue preventing extinction." The Chester Zoo boss said with no financial help from the government, the attraction was looking at £11.5million in losses due to lockdown. He added: "If we can indeed reopen our safe, outdoor spaces at the earliest proposed date of April 12 then, with no access to the government’s tailored support fund, our wildlife charity will be looking at estimated losses of £11.5million. “For now, and while our gates remain closed, support from the public continues to be our lifeline in the form of memberships, animal adoptions and donations – for which we are incredibly grateful.” Boris Johnson said in order for lockdown to end on the potential dates the government has provided, conditions would have to be met at each stage of the plan.
