Breaking News ! Several towns in Cheshire have been named as retail's 'most resilient regions' according to a study published by Drapers. Altrincham, Alderley Edge and Tarporley were among the areas mentioned in the study, as retailers navigate the difficult challenges brought on by the Covid pandemic and the rise of online shopping. As shops across the UK are finally able to reopen this month – after almost eight months with their shutters down since the first lockdown was announced on March 23 last year – they will re-emerge into a new retail landscape. Where central London and big cities once commanded the largest footfalls and spending, it is the smaller, local hubs like places in Cheshire that have proven more resilient throughout the pandemic. Lucy Stainton, head of retail and strategic partnerships at Local Data Company (LDC) said: “People are staying and shopping local, and have been more nervous about heading into city centres. “Market towns and local high streets have more essential retailing [such as medical and grocery outlets], which has allowed them to retain footfall.” Altrincham was the standout, enjoying the biggest improvement in Harper Dennis Hobbs' Vitality Index, climbing 440 places since 2019, to 37th place and was recently featured in The Times best places to live for 2021. The market town which likes to call itself part of Cheshire enjoyed the lowest rise in overall retail vacancy rates in the northwest region for 2020, at 0.4 per cent. Part of this success story is down to the fact the town has undergone a series of developments since 2011, costing £100 million in public and private funding to date.

. Michael Murray, head of elevation at Flannels, which trades from six stores in the region, explained that his company is attracted to the regions as they are frequently underserved by the luxury market: “More often than not, Flannels is the only outlet in these regional areas that caters to fashion-forward individuals so our stores become destinations. Liverpool, Leicester and Sheffield are all large retail destinations in the UK that haven’t been exposed to a luxury in-store environment.” Alderley Edge is also proving resilient during Covid, with a 6.7 per cent fall in vacancies compared with pre-Covid, thanks to its affluent demographic. Cheshire as a whole is an affluent region that retailers could explore and came in at number 20 in the Vitality Index. Sam Brightmore, owner of indie Bottega in Tarporley, stocks brands such as Project AJ117. She said overall sales in Q4 of 2020 were up by 42 per cent on 2019. She had her best-ever November in 13 years. Brightmore attributed this to offering Black Friday discounts, which she had previously resisted, partnering with indie website Trouva, and operating on an appointment-only basis when retail was allowed to reopen, as customers enjoyed the exclusivity.
