Breaking News ! Portishead Open Air Pool will open to swimmers again in May - but some restrictions will still remain in place. Trustees at the lido have confirmed that the attraction is likely to open on May 10. The news follows the announcement by Boris Johnson who said, as part of the country’s roadmap out of lockdown, pools could open on April 12. However the opening does come with caveats, including people can only swim with members of their own household. Bosses at Portishead Pool Community Trust, which took over control of the lido from North Somerset Council in 2009, said it was never their intention to open in April, even if restrictions allowed. Trustees have submitted an application to be one of the pools to host the National Swimathon on May 7,8 and 9. Whether the lido will be a host for the event has yet to be confirmed. When the pool does open it will be available on a pre booked basis only and just for lane swimming. Pool trustee Andy Thatcher said: “It was never our plan to open in April. “We have provisionally arranged to host the National Swimathon in May so it’s likely that our opening date to the public will be after that on May 10. But when it was run by the council its opening date was usually some time in May. If restrictions are completely lifted by June 21, as hoped by the Government, further changes may be made to allow the pool to open to all as in previous years.

. “We assumed that this year, in light of the pandemic, it would be pre booked lane swimming all the way through. “But that may well change depending on what happens with restrictions.” The pool was forced to close to swimmers for the whole of last year. However it has been used as a location for a number of film companies. Volunteers have also been working throughout the pandemic to carry out improvements to the lido including upgrading the womens’ showers and changing rooms. The cafe - which it is also hoped will re-open when restrictions ease, has also been decorated. “We are really looking forward to opening the pool after having to close last year,” said Mr Thatcher. “It’s a popular attraction with so many people and we look forward to welcoming everyone back when it is safe to do so.” Updates regarding the opening will be posted on the pool website at www.portisheadopenairpool.org.uk.
