Breaking News ! It’s pretty hard to imagine what the monarchy would look like without the Queen. But following the death of Prince Philip, Prince Charles has had to step up, taking on the role of the Duke of Edinburgh and his duties. It’s spurred conversations as to what the monarchy might look like with Prince Charles on the throne. Of course, there are some things that’ll definitely happen when the Queen’s eldest son, The Prince of Wales, becomes king. He’ll move into Buckingham Palace, which will cause a residential reshuffle for other royals, and Camilla will get a title change - although she won’t be known as Queen. Prince William will profit from the Duchy of Cornwall, and the national anthem will change to ‘God Save the King.’ But there are some things Charles himself will take the reins on, and some things he’s started planning for already. Here’s what we know. Slimmed down monarchy According to reports, Prince Charles has wanted to cut down the monarchy for a very long time, with his plans jump-started following the Prince Andrew crisis. Royal author Angela Levin told talkRADIO: "Prince Charles has wanted for a very long time to cut the monarchy down to save costs and to make people be worth the money that they got from the taxpayer.” Levin said she imagines when Prince Charles becomes king that Prince Harry and Meghan, who stepped down from royal duties last year, will be ‘ditched’ as members of the Royal Family. It comes as the Queen revealed her team of seven senior royals at Christmas, made up of Prince Charles, Camilla, Princess Anne, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex. This arrangement fits with the Prince of Wales' long term vision of a royal regeneration. Prince Charles has already stepped in to control the spending of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, after a report revealed Eugenie - daughter of Prince Andrew - spent £100,000 on her gap year exploring India, America, Thailand and South Africa. New titles Once Charles takes the throne, many members of the family will be handed different titles to reflect their new positions. At the moment, Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales. However, this title isn't his specifically, and is the official title given to the heir to the throne at the discretion of the monarch. Princess Diana became the Princess of Wales when the pair married in 1981.

What this means is that the current Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, will become Prince of Wales when Charles takes the throne. However, what's not known is whether his wife Kate will take the title. She could follow Camilla's example and not take it out of respect, or use it as a tribute to the mother-in-law she never met. Prince Charles is also now the Duke of Edinburgh, following the death of Prince Phillip last month - but doesn't use it. Once he becomes King, the title will go to Charles' younger brother, Prince Edward. Public access to palaces The Prince of Wales reportedly plans to give people greater access to the royal palaces when he becomes king. Charles wants Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, Windsor Castle, Sandringham and Balmoral to be transformed from “private spaces to public places”, according to the Sunday Times. The newspaper said the heir to the throne wants these royal residences to open more widely for longer periods during the year. Charles is reportedly speaking to the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and other royals about the plans. The Times said Charles is considering opening Buckingham Palace and gardens throughout the year when he is king, including when he is in residence.
