MetiNews.Com - The Good Morning Britain host scolded the Health Secretary for his handling of the pandemic
Breaking News ! Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid tore strips off Matt Hancock this morning after he claimed he was "exasperated" that he and his team had not been thanked for their handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The Health Secretary featured on Good Morning Britain today (Tuesday, February 23), to discuss the roadmap out of lockdown in England, the Mirror reported. During the interview, he claimed there had never been a "national shortage" of personal protective equipment for medical staff (PPE). Piers Morgan shouted over Hancock, citing the UK's high death toll as evidence of the Government's poor performance. He also grilled the Health Secretary on the recent ruling that he had broken the law over Covid contracts. In response, Hancock said his team should be thanked for their work to avoid a national shortage of PPE, but Piers redoubled his attack, with Susanna backing him up. The Health Secretary said: "I think we should be on this show thanking my team, they worked so hard." Piers fired back: "If you wanna play that game with us, you and your team have resided over a woeful handling of this pandemic that has led to us having the worst death toll in Europe." He added: "So I’m sorry if my first thought when you come on is not to thank you and your team for their brilliant handling of this pandemic." Hancock refused to apologise for breaking the law over the contracts and said: "If I were given my time again and given the choice between doing work that saved lives or filing paperwork on the right date, I'd have done the same." But Piers wasn't backing down easily. He interrupted the cabinet minister to shout: "Hang on, you could do both can't you? Surely you can try to get PPE which we were short of, and also ensure your department doesn't break the law." Hancock responded: "My job is to save lives Piers, and that is what we did.
.. just let me answer the question. The demand for PPE went up 10 times so of course my team was massively stretched."
The GMB pair went on to challenge his claims regarding the national PPE shortage, but all he said was: "There were areas where it was enormously challenging. "There were areas where there were problems, but we never had a national outage of it. We were very close to that, but we didn’t have a national outage of PPE.” He went on: "There were shortages locally, there was no national shortage because of the work my team did. I back them 100%." In response to his team, Piers told him: "I’m really struck that you feel incensed that we’re not thanking you enough for your handling of this pandemic." Hancock hit back: "My team, actually, I was asking you to thank. I was asking you to thank the people who spent 18 hours a day, seven days a week for weeks on end to make sure that we’ve got the PPE that we needed and save lives as a result."
